Premier League table based on Sky Sports results: Which team was best on TV last year?

Manchester City were easily the class of the field as they dominated the Premier League last season, cruising to the title with an astonishing 100 points.

Pep Guardiola’s men finished 19 points clear of rivals Manchester United, scoring an astounding 106 goals in the process.

City were one of the most exciting teams to watch last season, highlighted by the fact that 20 of their matches were broadcast live on Sky Sports.

Only Liverpool, with their attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, had more of their games shown on the small screen.

And City obviously felt no pressure performing in front of the cameras, racking up 48 points from their televised matches.

However, not every team was so efficient when watched by a worldwide audience as relegated Stoke failed to pick up a single win when their fixtures were shown on Sky.

Research conducted by the team at www.broadbandchoices.co.uk has created a league table based on the results of the 2017/18 Premier League games shown live on TV.

Liverpool were top of the pile for matches shown on BT Sport with an 85.71 per cent win ratio – but how did every top-flight team perform in games on Sky Sports?

20. Stoke City

Played: 10, Won: 0, Drawn: 6, Lost: 4, Points: 8, Goals For: 8, Goals Against: 17

The Potters only picked up four points all season during games shown on Sky Sports, so it’s no surprise they tumbled down into the Championship.

Win percentage: 0.0

19. Leicester City

Played: 9, Won: 1, Drawn: 5, Lost: 3, Points: 8, Goals For: 13, Goals Against: 19

Surprisingly, the 2016/17 Premier League champions had a abysmal record in front of the cameras last season.

The Foxes only tasted victory once on Sky, but their performances out of the spotlight were enough for a comfortable top-half finish.

18. Swansea City

Played: 8, Won: 1, Drawn: 0, Lost: 7, Points: 3, Goals For: 2, Goals Against: 21

The Swans endured a miserable campaign last time out and conceded a massive 21 goals in eight broadcasted matches.

17. West Bromwich Albion

Played: 8, Won: 1, Drawn: 4, Lost: 3, Points: 7, Goals For: 7, Goals Against: 12

The Baggies actually experienced an upturn in form towards the end of the season under the stewardship of Darren Moore, but it wasn’t enough to avoid relegation.

16. West Ham United

The Hammers featured 14 times on Sky last campaign but only mustered two wins from those televised matches.

15. Everton

Played: 13, Won: 2, Drawn: 4, Lost: 7, Points: 10, Goals For: 10, Goals Against: 23

Everton also got more than their fair share of air time but struggled to hit the heights under Sam Allardyce, scoring just 10 goals in front of the cameras.

14. Huddersfield Town

Played: 6, Won: 1, Drawn: 2, Lost: 3, Points: 5, Goals For: 3, Goals Against: 9

The Terriers were involved in plenty of thrilling matches during their debut Premier League campaign, more than earning their cut of the TV money.

Win percentage: 16.67

13. Crystal Palace

Played: 9, Won: 2, Drawn: 1, Lost: 6, Points: 7, Goals For: 11, Goals Against: 13

A season of two halves for the Eagles, with a dire start rescued by the steady guidance of Roy Hodgson.

However, they tended to fall short when on the box with just seven points from a possible 27.

12. Southampton

Played: 12, Won: 3, Drawn: 4, Lost: 5, Points: 13, Goals For: 17, Goals Against: 20

Saints flirted with relegation last season and only won a quarter of their matches broadcast on Sky Sports.

Win percentage: 25.00

11. Bournemouth

Played: 7, Won: 2, Drawn: 2, Lost: 3, Points: 8, Goals For: 9, Goals Against: 15

The Cherries have established themselves in the top flight and know how to perform when all the attention is on them, losing just three of their televised matches.

Win percentage: 28.57

10. Newcastle United

Played: 14, Won: 4, Drawn: 3, Lost: 7, Points: 15, Goals For: 12, Goals Against: 15

Newcastle remain a big draw for the armchair fan with 14 of their matches shown on Sky Sports last season.

The Magpies managed to take 15 points from those games, although they lost seven of them.

9. Watford

Played: 6, Won: 2, Drawn: 1, Lost: 3, Points: 7, Goals For: 11, Goals Against: 13

The Hornets are always good for a shock but don’t seem to get the recognition they deserve, with a 33.33 win percentage from just six matches shown on Sky Sports.

8. Liverpool

Played: 21, Won: 7, Drawn: 9, Lost: 5, Points: 30, Goals For: 39, Goals Against: 29

By contrast, Liverpool failed to live up to expectations when their matches were broadcast.

Jurgen Klopp’s side dropped points in 14 of their league-high 21 matches on Sky Sports last season.

7. Brighton & Hove Albion

Played: 11, Won: 4, Drawn: 4, Lost: 3, Points: 16, Goals For: 14, Goals Against: 17

One of the best performing sides outside the traditional ’top six’, with four wins and four draws from 11 televised games.

Win percentage: 36.36

6. Chelsea

Played: 20, Won: 9, Drawn: 5, Lost: 6, Points: 32, Goals For: 30, Goals Against: 25

The Blues were shown on Sky 20 times in 2017/18, managing nine victories and five draws in their failed title defence.

Win percentage: 45.00

5. Arsenal

Played: 20, Won: 9, Drawn: 4, Lost: 7, Points: 31, Goals For: 40, Goals Against: 34

The Gunners matched Chelsea for points from their televised games but have a slightly better goal difference.

4. Burnley

The real surprise package of the season, with Burnley earning 10 points from a possible 18 in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Win percentage: 50.00

3. Tottenham Hotspur

Played: 18, Won: 10, Drawn: 4, Lost: 4, Points: 34, Goals For: 37, Goals Against: 20

Spurs managed to rifle home 37 goals during their 18 screened matches, just a couple behind Liverpool and Arsenal despite playing less games.

Win percentage: 55.56

2. Manchester United

Played: 20, Won: 12, Drawn: 3, Lost: 5, Points: 39, Goals For: 35, Goals Against: 16

Jose Mourinho’s side have a reputation for parking the bus, and the Red Devils only conceded 16 goals in 20 matches on Sky last season.

Win percentage: 55.56

1. Manchester City

Played: 20, Won: 15, Drawn: 3, Lost: 2, Points: 48, Goals For: 48, Goals Against: 17

Thoroughly deserving champions and easily the most entertaining team in the league with 48 goals in their 20 matches on Sky.

Pep Guardiola’s side only lost two of those televised matches, racking up a whopping 48 points in the process.

Manchester United Women carry the day

Manchester United Women began their new era after a 13-year absence with a 1-0 win against Liverpool Women in the Continental Tyres Cup.

United, who disbanded their senior women's team in February 2005 as it was deemed not to be part of the club's "core business", made a winning start thanks to Scotland international Lizzie Arnot's back-post finish with just eight minutes to go.

It marked a successful return for United manager Casey Stoney to her former club, after she was given the job of creating a squad and a team just weeks before the season.

Her new-look team showed they will be a tough proposition in the FA Women's Championship this season with this win against higher division opposition.

"They stuck together," Stoney told BBC Radio 5 live. "For a team that has only been together for six weeks they weathered the storm quite well.

"I recruited from the second tier, they've stepped up and shown they are more than capable of playing a level above that.

"There's no pressure from the club to get promotion but these players want to be playing in the top flight. They're history makers now."

Liverpool, who had their own summer of upheaval with the arrival of new head coach Neil Redfearn and 12 departures to replace, might have levelled had Christie Murray's free-kick not struck a post and bounced out late on.

Among those 12 exits were seven players that moved along the M62 to United, notably England full-back Alex Greenwood and goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain who played key roles in the victory with an assist and key saves in particular.

"If you look at the resources Manchester United have got, for us to come out and put on a performance like that is a great achievement." Redfearn told BBC Sport.

"We're eight weeks in the making, we put a good squad together, we're two or three players short which we'll have a look at in the next transfer window, and we've put together a side that's capable of competing."

Fresh face versus old head

The late winner was a huge fillip for Stoney, who along with assistant Willie Kirk, won the tactical battle against the experienced Redfearn.

It was strictly business for former England international Stoney, who only hung up the boots in February, as she emerged from the tunnel smiling in a suit to take her place in the dugout.

The 35-year-old was cool and calm on the bench, but still a vocal presence as she issued regular instructions to her side throughout.

Her opposite number Neil Redfearn donned shorts and a tracktop, and looked happy and relaxed for much of the game, but his side came away with nothing.

Rivalry: Was there spice on and off the field?

Fans mixed at Prenton Park without incident

There was an enthusiastic crowd at Prenton Park to cheer on both sides, although the nature of the singing was aimed towards encouragement rather than antagonising any opponents.

Fans mixed without incident in the stands, but the crowd of 829 in a 16,500-capacity stadium made it difficult to create an atmosphere.

On the field, it was fiercely competitive and spirited but that, it could be argued, was down to the competitive nature of two well-assembled, well-matched sides rather than any derby fervour.

"There was a bit of spice in the game," United boss Stoney added. "I used to play for them and recruited heavily from their team.

"It is pleasing but you want to beat any team whether it's Liverpool or Reading who we play next week, you want to go out, perform and get points on the board."

Despite the hard tackling and committed challenges, the only card to be shown went to United's teenage midfielder Lauren James for leaving the field too slowly on her substitution.

What can United take away from the game?

On this evidence against an extremely competitive top-flight side, Manchester United Women will be a second-tier force this term.

The top level experience of ex-Juventus playmaker Katie Zelem, Greenwood and Chamberlain showed in a composed performance and will prove useful to a squad with an average age of 21, while the most exciting prospect proved to be 16-year-old midfielder James who shone in the hurly-burly of midfield.

Stoney was able to persuade the Arsenal academy talent to swap north London for the north west, and her selection suggested regular game-time will be available going forward.

Is this the start of a new rivalry?

With Manchester City already well established as a Women's Super League force, the presence of a second Manchester club can only add to the spice, but United will have to wait at least a year before the prospect of regular matches against the likes of Liverpool and City.

There is every chance of progress in the cups, which would generate the possibility of such rivalries being further developed, and success would certainly make United a team to pique the interest of their more established neighbours.

Jose Mourinho: Man Utd manager says Man City 'cannot buy class'

Premier League champions Manchester City are a "rich club" but "cannot buy class", says Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was responding to a question about City's £10m Amazon Prime documentary All Or Nothing, which was released earlier this week.

Pep Guardiola's side won last season's title with a record haul of 100 points.

Mourinho said: "I think you can have a fantastic movie, respecting others. You don't need to be disrespectful."

A film crew was given behind-the-scenes access - including to the dressing room - for an eight-part documentary about City.

Mourinho said: "I haven't seen it but I know a few things about the movie. My reaction is if you are a rich club you can buy top players, you cannot buy class. That is my first reaction.

"The second reaction is because I am in the movie, I could ask for some royalties."

The second episode shows City's record-breaking 14th Premier League victory in a row, secured with a 2-1 win over United at Old Trafford in December 2017.

Narrator, British actor Sir Ben Kingsley, describes it as "Guardiola versus Mourinho once more; possession versus defence; attacking football versus 'park the bus'".

Later in the season, City could have won the title by beating Mourinho's side at Etihad Stadium on 7 April and were 2-0 ahead at half-time - but their opponents turned the game around to win 3-2.

The hosts had printed souvenir T-shirts in the hope they would be crowned champions that day, but the celebrations were delayed by two weeks.

Mourinho added: "You know, a movie without me doesn't sell much. I needed to be there.

"But if they send me one of the shirts they had in the tunnel when we played there - the shirts that were saying 'we did it on derby day' - if they send me one of these shirts, I give up about the royalties."

LINDELOF: I WANTED TO BE A GOALKEEPER

Victor Lindelof has grown to become a talented defender, but it will surprise many to hear that the Manchester United man once had his heart set on playing in goal.

Speaking ahead of the Reds' Premier League trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, the 24-year old Swede explained how his aspirations of being a goalkeeper as a youngster came about after receiving a shirt with a United hero's name on the back.

“When I was younger, we had a market in my hometown in Sweden that sold different shirts there and my mother brought me a Barthez shirt, so that's why I wanted to be a goalkeeper,” said Victor.

“I wanted to be a striker as well but, in that moment of my life, I wanted to be a goalkeeper.”

Fabian Barthez kept 30 clean sheets in just under 100 appearances for United, between 2000 and 2004.

Barthez arrived at Old Trafford in 2000 and went on to become a favourite of the fans during his four years at the club, helping the Reds to win two Premier League titles as well as keeping 30 clean sheets.

On the international scene, Fabien won the World Cup with France in 1998 and went on to keep 10 clean sheets across three major tournaments before retiring from football in 2007.

The Reds got the better of Brighton twice at Old Trafford last season, with victories against the Seagulls in the league and in the FA Cup, but were beaten on our first trip to the Amex Stadium back in May.

Victor acknowledged that United are in for another difficult away day on the south coast, but keen to continue our winning start to the new season, after beating Leicester City on opening night.

“It's a tough opponent,” the centre-back said. “They are a very, very strong team. They work very hard for each other and they never give up, so it's going to be a difficult match, but we just have to keep going.

”We had a good few moments in the last game at home [against Leicester] and things we can continue to improve on and stuff like that, so we just have to keep working hard and prepare ourselves for the game and hopefully we can get the three points there as well.“

United's opening game against Leicester saw Victor partner with Eric Bailly in central defence, as he made only his second outing for the Reds since returning to the fold following his World Cup exploits with Sweden.

“It was my second game of the season and I had a lot of practice before that, but yeah it went well,” our no.2 reflected.

“Eric is a good defender and it was a pleasure to play with him and hopefully we can perform and play well in the future. I'm here to help the team and I'm always trying my best, so hopefully I can just keep working hard and be at this level that I am at the moment.”
